City of London installs contactless donation points to help rough sleepers

The City of London is installing contactless donation points where people can give money to a charity helping the Square Mile's homeless and rough sleeper population.

Londoners will be able to donate £3 to the Beam charity by tapping their contactless cards at four locations in the financial district. The campaign will initially run for three months, with more donation points added if it proves successful.

Marianne Fredericks, chairman, City of London Corporation’s homelessness and rough sleeping sub-committee, says: "In a culture where people are increasingly using their debit and credit cards and carrying very little cash, this is an effective and efficient way to help the most vulnerable in our society."

The project follows a similar effort by the rest of London, which in December began installing donation points where people can give £3 a tap to a pool of 22 charities comprising the London Homeless Charities Group.

It’s great to see payment technology being used in such a positive way! Congratulations to the team at GoodBox for enabling these donations.
